LOS ANGELES – A 42-year-old man who pleaded guilty last
month to killing his common-law wife and teenage stepson was
sentenced today by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.
Judge Sam Ohta sentenced Emilio Cruz Heredia of Los Angeles to 40
years to life in state prison for the 2006 slayings of Carol
Bloomfield and her 17-year-old son, Jonathan Bloomfield.
On June 26, as jury selection began in his trial, Heredia pleaded
guilty to first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his wife and
guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of her son. Deputy
District Attorney Mary Murray of the Family Violence Division said
two counts of child endangerment were dismissed as part of a
negotiated settlement.
