LOS ANGELES – A 51-year-old man serving life in prison
without parole for his 1998 quadruple murder conviction was charged
today with the murder of four women in the late 1980s and 1990s, the
District Attorney’s office announced.
Michael Hughes, (dob 11-1-56), is charged in case BA342652 with
four counts each of murder and rape and one count of sodomy by
force, said Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace with the Major
Crimes Division. The felony complaint for arrest warrant includes
the special circumstances of felony murder/rape, multiple murders
and prior murder conviction, making Hughes eligible for the death
penalty.
The body of a 15-year-old was found in Imperial Park in Inglewood
by two city park employees on Jan. 22, 1986. On May 26, 1986, two
teenagers found the body of a woman in the stairwell of a school at
68th Street. The third victim was found in a garage at 323 W. 55th
St. on Aug. 30, 1990. The fourth victim was discovered by a security
guard at 4635 W. Pico Blvd. on June 25, 1993. Autopsies revealed all
four victims had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death.
Hughes was allegedly identified through DNA samples from Sexual
Assault Kits by detectives with LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division who
were investigating unsolved murders between 1960 and 1997.
Arraignment will be announced at a later date.
