LOS ANGELES – A man who fatally stabbed his common-law wife and his teenage stepson during a domestic dispute pleaded guilty today to two counts of murder as jury selection began in his trial.

Deputy District Attorney Mary Murray of the Family Violence Division said Emilio Cruz Heredia, 42, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Carol Bloomfield and guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of her 17-year-old son, Jonathan Bloomfield. The victims were slain Aug. 14, 2006. Two counts of child endangerment are expected to be dismissed at the time of sentencing as part of a negotiated settlement.

Judge Sam Ohta ordered Heredia back July 14 for sentencing at Los Angeles Superior Court, Department 120. The defendant will be sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison. Family members are expected to make victim impact statements at the hearing, the prosecutor said.
